Dr. Spicer is a Charleston native. He completed undergraduate training at Davidson College in Davidson, NC, and received his MD from the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed his adult psychiatric training at the Medical College of Virginia of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, where he served as chief resident. He gained experience in a diversity of psychotherapy modalities including insight-oriented, supportive, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Dr. Spicer then completed Child and Adolescent training at the renowned Payne-Whitney Clinic of the Cornell Division of New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan. He received intensive training in early infancy psychiatry (at the Sackler Institute) and pervasive developmental disorder psychiatry with Dr. Margaret Hertzig, a longstanding pioneer in the field. He also received extensive training in psychodynamic psychotherapy and play therapy.
Upon completing his training, Dr. Spicer relocated to Charleston South Carolina and entered private practice. He serves as voluntary clinical faculty at the department of psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Spicer is board certified in both Adult Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
